FieldGuard Scout Compact Camping Hatchet: Trailhead Tan
Compact Size. Serious Camp Utility.

The FieldGuard Scout is Off-Grid Gear's answer to a problem every camper knows. A full-size hatchet is the tool you want at the fire, and it is also the tool that gets left in the garage because it is too big and too heavy to justify for a weekend trip. A knife packs easy, but it does not chop. The Scout sits right in the middle. It is a true compact camping hatchet, 9.5 inches overall and 11 ounces, built to ride in a backpack, a camp box, a vehicle kit or an overlanding rig and actually get used.

The head is 420HC stainless steel, 4.8 mm thick, with a 3.2-inch cutting edge. That is real substance for a tool this size, and the stainless construction means less fuss about moisture than a traditional carbon steel hatchet. The contoured handle pairs rigid polypropylene with rubberized TPR grip surfaces, so it stays put in your hand wet or dry.

What sets the Scout apart is the head itself. The underside sweeps inward into a large opening above the handle with a finger groove built into it. Grip low on the handle for chopping momentum, or choke up into the groove under the head for close, controlled work like splitting kindling and shaving tinder. Two grips, one tool, no switching to a knife.

A protective sheath is included. Sheathed, the whole package weighs 12 ounces. Small enough that you will bring it. Built well enough that you will be glad you did.

Trailhead Tan: A desert tan handle with black grip inserts and a blackwash head. The tan is easy to spot on a tailgate, a log or the ground when the light goes. The Scout also comes in Slate Green, and the two are identical in every spec. Pick the color that matches your kit.

420HC Stainless Steel. 4.8 mm Thick.

The Scout's head is where the weight went. It is cut from 420HC stainless steel at a full 4.8 mm thick, which gives a 9.5-inch hatchet a surprising amount of bite behind the 3.2-inch cutting edge. Stainless was chosen on purpose. A camp hatchet lives in dew, rain, snow and the bottom of a damp gear bin, and 420HC handles that environment with better corrosion resistance and easier upkeep than the high-carbon steel on most traditional hatchets. It takes an edge readily, holds up to kindling and small firewood work, and is easy to touch back up with a file or stone after a hard weekend. Corrosion resistant is not the same as rustproof, so towel it dry after wet use. The head wears a blackwash finish, a dark tumbled look that hides scuffs and keeps the hatchet looking right after real use. The sweeping head profile is not just for looks either. It concentrates the cutting power of a hatchet into a tool that fits in a pack pocket.

Two Grips. One Hatchet.

This is the design feature you will notice first and use most. The underside of the Scout's head sweeps inward to form a large opening above the handle, with a finger groove shaped into it. Hold the Scout low on the handle and it swings like a hatchet should, with enough reach and momentum to split kindling and work down small campfire rounds. Slide your hand up into the groove beneath the head and it becomes a close-control tool. Your hand is right behind the cutting power, which is exactly where you want it for shaving feather sticks, trimming small branches, notching and the detail work that normally sends you reaching for a knife. The opening also gives the Scout a silhouette you will recognize from across the campsite. Nothing else in the kit looks like it.

Contoured PP/TPR Handle. Secure Wet or Dry.

The handle is a two-material build. Rigid polypropylene gives it structure and keeps the overall weight down. Thermoplastic rubber is molded over the gripping surfaces for traction and comfort, so the hatchet does not twist or slip when your hands are cold, wet or gloved. The contours are shaped to lock your hand in place in both positions, low on the handle for chopping and up in the groove under the head for fine work. It is a compact handle by design, because the whole point of the Scout is a footprint that disappears into your gear, but there is nothing dainty about the hold. Jimping along the top of the handle gives your thumb traction in the choked-up position, and a lanyard hole in the pommel lets you add a wrist loop or hang it in the camp box. This version wears a Trailhead Tan handle with black grip inserts.

9.5 Inches. 11 Ounces. It Goes Where the Big Axe Does Not.

Every spec on the Scout was chosen with the same question in mind: will you actually bring it? At 9.5 inches overall and 11 ounces without the sheath, the answer is yes. It fits in a backpack side pocket, a camp box, a center console, a door pocket, an RV drawer or an overlanding drawer system without displacing anything else. Keep one in the vehicle for road trips and roadside preparedness. Keep one with the cabin firewood. Keep one in the backyard firepit kit so you stop hunting for the big axe every time you want a quick fire. With the sheath on, the complete package is 12 ounces. That is less than a full water bottle, and it is a working hatchet.

Nylon Sheath. Belt Loops. Ready to Carry.

Every Scout comes with a fitted nylon sheath, and it is a simple, honest piece of gear that does its job. Top-loading, straight-through design: the hatchet goes in the opening at the top and slides straight down into place, and a hook-and-loop closure holds it there. No snaps to fumble, no buckles to break. The nylon is riveted at the stress points so it holds up to being tossed in a truck bed and dragged through a gear bin, and the Off-Grid Gear logo is on the front. Loops on the back let you wear it on a belt or strap it to a pack, a camp bag or whatever your gear setup has to offer, so the Scout rides where you can reach it instead of buried at the bottom of the box. Sheathed, the whole package is 12 ounces.

Compact Enough to Pack. Capable Enough to Matter.

The FieldGuard Scout is Off-Grid Gear doing what it does best: a purpose-built outdoor tool with real materials and an honest price. A 4.8 mm 420HC stainless steel head, a 3.2-inch cutting edge, a contoured PP/TPR handle, a second grip position built right into the head, and a protective sheath, all at 12 ounces total. It will not replace a full-size axe, and it was never meant to. It is the hatchet that is actually with you at the campsite, in the vehicle, at the cabin and at the firepit. Pack smaller. Stay ready. Put the Scout to work.

A Little Care

After use, knock off wood residue, dirt and moisture, and towel the head dry before it goes back in the sheath. The blade is stainless, not rustproof. A light coat of protective oil before a long storage stretch is cheap insurance, especially after a wet trip. Give the hatchet and the sheath a quick look before each use.

Use It Right

The Scout is a real cutting tool, sized for kindling, small firewood and campsite work. Wear eye protection, chop on a stable surface and keep hands, feet, people and pets clear of the swing. Do not throw it, strike metal, pry with the edge or push it into wood beyond its size. Check that cutting or collecting wood is allowed where you are, and keep it away from kids.
